Song of the Week: Take Care – not by Drake or Rihanna or Florence

When Florence is introducing the song ‘Take Care’ that she is about to play with her ‘machine’, she name-checks the original artists. Can anyone see what’s wrong with this sentence?

This is ‘Take Care’, it’s produced by Jamie XX and it’s by Drake and Rihanna.

Well, the song she’s about to sing was produced by Jamie XX, but it was NOT by Drake and Rihanna. Jamie XX released this song as part of his unlikely collaboration with the late soul master Gil Scott Heron –best known for keeping the revolution off TV – just before Heron became ‘the late’. It was a remix of Heron’s song ‘I’ll take Care of U’.

In all honesty, the deterioration of the “You” in the song’s title to “U” and then being taken out altogether is symbolic of the song’s whole trajectory. Look, Drake, Rihanna and Florence are great, but Gil Scott got more should in his pinkie than those three have combined.
